Joan Butler Ford Professor of Sociology. Known for papers on the connective power of weak ties in social networks. A founder of modern economic sociology, through a series of innovative articles beginning in the 1980's. Established a sustained and fruitful dialog with economics. Author of Getting a Job (1974, 1995), and of a series of papers from 1978 to 1988 on "threshold models" of collective behavior.
