McPeek is an evolutionary ecologist whose work crosses disciplinary lines from physiology and molecular biology to community ecology and macroevolution. His research integrates empirical and theoretical studies of how evolutionary processes structure communities, and how ecological processes in turn shape adaptation and diversification of the organisms comprising these communities. From developing methods for comparative analyses, to performing demanding field experiments, to illuminating fundamental conceptual issues with creative empirical studies, he has integrated discoveries in different areas to reconstruct case studies of evolutionary adaptation, diversification, and community organization.
