García is a leading researcher and writer on the recent history of US immigration policy. After a much-praised first book examining Cuban immigrants in Miami, she turned her attention to Central American migrants in the transnational context of Mexico and Canada as well as the US, recognizing that the policies of the three North American nations were inextricably interconnected. Her third book examines U.S. refugee and asylum policy in the post Cold War era.  She is now completing a study of climate change "refugees" in the Americas.  She brings to the Academy her well-informed historical perspective on a hot-button issue.
