She is known principally as a novelist, but has also published various works of non-fiction, including biographies of English novelists Arnold Bennett (1974) and ANgus Wilson (1995). She edited the fifth edition of the Oxford Comapnion to English Literature (1985) of which a fully revised version (sixth edition) appeared in 2000. She has travelled widely and lectured in many countries, often for the British Council. SHe is a patron of the Cambodia Trust and the Child Psychotherapy Trust. She has three children and various grandchildren, and is married to the biographer, Michael Holroyd. She lives in London and West Somerset.
