University Professor Emeritus University of Gttingen, Germany Since stepping down from the directorship of the Physics Institute, he has focused on writing on speech research (Computer Speech: Recognition, Compression, Synthesis 1999) and applications of number theory and fractals in physics, engineering and art. He continues as a consultant on acoustics, speech and hearing for Bell Labs (Lucent), which he originally joined in 1954. More recently, he has given public lectures on the history and future of physics and other topics of general interest.
