Bietak, an Egyptologist, has participated in UNESCO's International Campaign to save the Monuments of Nubia, and has excavated at Tell el-Dab'a in Egypt in order to gain knowledge of the period of Hyksos rule in Egypt, and of the palace built in the reign of Tuthmosis III after the expulsion of the Hyksos from Egypt. He also co-founded and served as Director of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Cairo. In 1989 he founded Agypten und Levante, an interdisciplinary scholarly journal. Bietak is a member of the Austrian Academy and directs the Academy's major project, The Synchronization of Civilizations in the Eastern Mediterranean in the 2nd Millennium BC 2000. He is currently the Head and Principal Investigator of an ERC Advanced Grant funded project 'The Hyksos Enigma' and continues his work in research and supporting young scientists.
