Visiting appointments: Collège de France and École des Hautes Études, Paris.  Author The Ideal of Painting (1984) and catalogue of Pietro Testa (1612-1650), Philadelphia Museum of Art (1989); co-author with Charles Dempsey Nicolas Poussin: Friendship and the Love of Painting (1996); author Pontormo: Portrait of a Halberdier (1997); The Domenichino Affair: Novelty, Imitation, and Theft in Seventeenth-Century Rome (2005). Awarded I Tatti Mongan Prize, 2011. President Renaissance Society of America (2010-2012).
