His scientific research includes verification of nuclear test ban treaties, nuclear arms control, evolution of stresses and earthquake activity in California, earthquake prediction, and state of stress in plate interiors. He originated ideas of forming the Southern California Earthquake Center and Alaskan Volcano Center. One of his main contribution is the establishment of plate tectonics.
