Research on the evolution of eucaryotic cells, she is a leading proponent of the idea that symbiogenesis -- the merger of previously independent organisms -- is a key factor in evolutionary change. She has also worked in support of the Gaia theory, which holds that the metabolism, growth, death, and evolution of interacting organisms play an active role in regulating the Earth's temperature and chemical composition.
