Scientific Director. Made contributions to the understanding of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Established its role in resistance to malaria, cloned the cDNA and the gene, and characterized several mutations causing the deficiency. Using G6PD as a marker, demonstrated the clonal origin of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and pioneered studies of its genetic basis.
