Louise Young has reshaped understanding of modern Japanese and East Asian history by reformulating the relationship of Japan to Asia, and of Tokyo to the rest of the nation. Both her prizewinning Japan's Total Empire (1999) and her Beyond the Metropolis (2013) changed received assumptions about the course and nature of Japanese modernity. Her forthcoming History of Class in Prewar Japan examines ideas of social class so prominent in modern Japanese society and politics. Young is a leader in the field, a renowned mentor of younger scholars, and a historian whose works are of interest to scholars of modernity and empire everywhere.
