Naughton is a leader in research addressing human-environment interactions related to the conservation of biodiversity and the protection of forest dwellers’ livelihoods. Her early work on human-wildlife conflicts around protected areas is a touchstone for scholars and conservation organizations. Later work, conducted with ecologists and economists, has demonstrated the implications of national parks for poverty, and challenged understanding of the effects of tenure security on forest protection. She is an expert on human dimensions of conservation in both East-Central Africa and the Amazon forest. This thought leadership has led to multiple collaborations with civil society, governmental, and international organizations.
