Barrett is recognized for her research on emotion in psychology and neuroscience. Her impact is noted through her H index of 95 (as of March, 2018) and her contributions have been recognized by the Royal Society of Canada, a Kavli Fellowship with the National Academy of Sciences, and a NIH Director's Pioneer Award. Her interdisciplinary research concerns the nature of emotion, using methods from psychology, psychophysiology, cognitive science, and neuroscience, and incorporating ideas from anthropology, linguistics, philosophy and the history of science. She has shown that a century of emotion research is inconsistent with the standard view of emotions as a small number of biologically distinct modules, and has developed a computational framework for understanding how emotions are constructed.
