In recent years, my research focus has shifted from solo work on literary theoretical topics (postmodernism, irony, parody, adaptation) to collaborative work on opera, undertaken with Michael Hutcheon, MD. Our four books on such topics as disease, death, the body, and aging have brought together medical and cultural history to examine timely issues for today through the vehicle of opera. We are now working on a study of audience response to opera as/and adaptation, especially in relation to Regieoper (director's opera).
