Co-inventor with Vladimir Rokhlin of the Fast Multipole Method in 1987, recognized as one of the top-ten algorithms of the 20th century. He has made transformative contributions to computational science. Since the1980s, he has shown the world the power of analysis-based algorithms for solving difficult computational problems of mathematical physics. He has changed our views of integral equations, particle simulations, spectral methods, fast Fourier transforms, and geometric complexity, inspiring many students and colleagues worldwide. He has received numerous awards, including the 2014 SIAM von Neumann Prize, the 2001 AMS Steele Prize, and membership in NAS and NAE.
