Leon Knopoff

Research centers on the problems of the interaction among the physics of fracture in inhomogeneous materials, the phenomenology of earthquake occurrence, and the nature of self-organizing processes in systems with a large number of degrees of freedom, with application to the problems of earthquake prediction. Present research includes the study of the development of pattern in large-scale systems out of the nature of interactions on short-and intermediate scales in the areas of earthquakes, musics, and language.
