Scholarly writing has been principally concerned with political parties in Western democratic societies. He has written comparative study and specialized works on politics in the United States and Great Britain. His work has emphasized the impact of historical and institutional factors in the development of parties, and the importance of candidate-selection methods. Other areas of research include government of state universities and the influence of domestic politics on the making of foreign policy.
