Probabilist, analyst, geometer, and algebraist. Signature achievement is the development, with others, of analytical techniques (Poincare, Nash and log-Sobolev inequalities) to study convergence rates of Markov chains on finite state space. Studied stochastic processes on algebraic and geometric structures and used analytic and geometric techniques to prove refined estimates for heat kernels in domains in Euclidean space and on manifolds. Recipient of the Rollo Davidson Prize and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
