Jacoby's research centers on the study of human memory. He originated the attributional approach to remembering, applying ideas that originated in social psychology to cognitive phenomena. He also led development of methods and theoretical ideas about implicit memory phenomena, publishing several major papers on this topic. In the 1990s, he developed the process known as dissociation procedure, a technique that separates aspects of behavior that are consciously controlled from those that run off automatically. More recently, he has developed tasks and analyses to study cognitive control and how to remediate processes that deteriorate in older adults.
