Using analysis, experiments, and numerical computations, researches flow of single-phase and two-phase fluids. Worked on non-Newtonian responses of suspensions of anisotropic particles, constructed equations relating stress to rate of strain. Extended approach with non-Newtonian suspending fluids and delineated mechanisms for migration of particles and droplets flowing down a tube. Current research addresses entangled polymers, polymer blends and other complex fluids. Editor of The Physics of Fluids (1998-present). Author of Laminar Flow & Convective Transport Processes (1992) and Advanced Transport Phenomena (2007).
