Kerry Emanuel is an atmospheric and climate scientist who has made fundamental contributions to the understanding of atmospheric convection and tropical weather systems. His research has advanced the understanding of the role of water vapor in the climate system. He has made notable progress on the physics of hurricanes, showing that hurricane intensity is expected to increase with increasing global mean temperatures and that turbulent mixing of the upper tropical oceans caused by hurricane activity may be a major driver of the ocean thermo-haline circulation.
