Oe was the author of The Silent Cry (1960) whose poetic force creates an imagined world, where life and myth condense to form a disconcerting picture of the human predicament today. In his imagined world, he succeeded in portraying the qualities humanity shares by intensifying what is individual. He was influenced by Dante, Rabelais, Balzac, Poe, Yeats, Eliot, Auden, and Sartre, and described his own work as “grotesque realism.” He was a recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1994).
