Holyoak is renowned for his research on thinking and reasoning, especially on the role of analogical reasoning. He has published over 200 scientific articles, and is the co-author or editor of Induction: Processes of Inference, Learning, and Discovery (1986), Mental Leaps: Analogy in Creative Thought (1995), The Analogical Mind (2001), The Oxford Handbook of Thinking and Reasoning (2012), and The Spider's Thread: Metaphor in Mind, Brain, and Poetry (2019). His interests in analogy and symbolism led him to a parallel career as a poet, which positions him to contribute to the arts as well as the sciences in the Academy.
