Professor of Archaeology and Classical Studies. Contributed to understanding of the Predynastic and Dynastic periods in Egypt, and the rise of the early African civilization of Aksum, in northern Ethiopia/Eritrea. Her excavations in Egypt have yielded data on the rank origins, state origins, organization of state bureaucracies, and the collapse of political systems. Recently excavated a 4,000 year old pharaonic harbor on the Red Sea with intact parts of 70-foot long cedar vessels used for seafaring expeditions to the Land of Punt. Author of An Introduction to the Archaeology of Ancient Egypt (2015). She is the recipient of the National Geographic Society's Chairman's Award for Exploration (1998). Her most recent book is: Seafaring Expeditions to Punt in the Middle Kingdom. Excavations at Mersa/Wadi Gawasis, Egypt (Brill, 2018).
