Dr.
Karolin Luger
University of Colorado Boulder
Biochemist; Educator
Area
Biological Sciences
Specialty
Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology
Elected
2017
Dr. Luger studies chromatin structure and function, using a wide range of biophysical approaches. She was the lead author on the classic paper describing the structure of the nucleosome (cited over 4000 times), the fundamental organizational unit of DNA in eukaryotic cells. She discovered how histone variants and post-translational modifications affect nucleosome structure and function, and how protein that assemble the nucleosome or control its function interact with and affect nucleosome assembly/function. Dr. Luger is involved in undergraduate education in the classroom and lab. She is a very community-minded scientist and will participate in Academy activities.
