Elected
1993
His research interest is in molecular diversity, molecular recognition, self-replicating and self-assembling systems. He developed the three-phase test for reactive intermediates and developed the cleft-like structures for studies in molecular recognition. While he was Camille Dreyfus Professor in Chemistry at Massachusetts Institute of Technology he devised synthetic, self-replicating molecules. In 1996 he became the Director of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology in La Jolla where he continues to work in molecular encapsulation, detection and destruction of nerve agents, and molecular behavior in small spaces.
