Segre pioneered human microbiome research to explore the diversity of bacteria, fungi and viruses that inhabit skin, re-framing our understanding of the human body as distinct ecological niches that support our essential commensal microbiome. Segre probed changes in skin microbial communities associated with common and rare disorders. She spearheaded real-time genomic studies to track multi‐drug resistant bacteria during an outbreak at the NIH Clinical Center. For this work, Segre was awarded the Service to America medal, the highest award for public service as a federal employee. She continues to work on microbiome research at the intersection with infectious disease and hospital epidemiology,
