At Bell Labs, did pioneering work on heteroepitaxy of dissimilar materials, leading to success in growing Si on insulators and thus various important devices. Also made advances in complex oxide thin films including high temperature superconductors, magnetic oxides, and transparent conductors. Several leadership roles at Bell Labs and Sandia National Labs, culminating in VP and Chief Technology Officer at Sandia; President of the Materials Research Society; Chair of National Materials Advisory Board and several National Academies studies; Member, National Academy of Engineering (Home Secretary 2016-20); Member, National Science Board (2016-22).
