Einstein Professor of Science. Research includes the elucidation of enzyme mechanisms, the design and synthesis of biochemically active model compounds, the fabrication of superconductive and other electroactive materials. He has synthesized compounds that mimic myoglobin, cytochrome c oxidase, and the primary photosynthetic energy conversion center of green plants. His current work is focused on the design and synthesis of bioavailable antisense RNA derivatives as specific antiviral and anti-cancer agents. These specific inhibitors can induce apoptosis in targeted cancer cells without toxicity to non-tumorigenic cells.
