Professor Judith W. Leavitt is the former Rupple Bascom and Ruth Bleier Professor of History of Medicine, History of Science, and Women's Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Leavitt received her B.A. in Social Science at Antioch College, M.A. and Ph.D. in History at the University of Chicago. She became a member of the University of Wisconsin-Madison staff in 1975. Her research focuses on the study of Mary Mallon, a history of childbirth in America, women and medicine, and a history of public health in Milwaukee. Some of her notable books include, "Brought to Bed: Childbearing in America 1750-1950" (winner of the Wisconsin Library Association Award) and "The Healthiest City: Milwaukee and the Politics of Health Reform" (winner of the Gambrinus Prize). He is a member of the National Women's Studies Association, Public Works Historical Society, American Public Health Association, Organization of American Historians, American Historical Association, and President of American Association for the History of Medicine.
