President of the Teagle Foundation since 2013.  President of Barnard College between 1994 and 2008.  Provost of Bryn Mawr College from 1986 to 1994 and, prior to that, faculty member in anthropology at Bryn Mawr and the University of Chicago.  Past president of the American Ethnological Society, former Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. Member, American Philosophical Society.  Chair of the board of ITHAKA Harbors; other current board memberships include Scholars at Risk and the Association of American Colleges and Universities. 

Anthropological research areas:  anthropology of gender, cultural theory, social organization, missionaries.  Other areas of special interest and expertise: women's education; liberal arts teaching and learning in varying higher education settings.
