Using string theory tools, he and his collaborators, clarified quantum properties of black holes. His 1997 proposal of the AdS/CFT conjecture, relating gauge theories to gravitational and string theories, had a great impact, with many confirmations. Its wide application ranges from the dynamics of black holes to quantum chromodynamics.
