She deals creatively with an extraordinary range of subjects, including agricultural innovation in early American settlement, racial understandings as mediated by technology on the Anglo-American frontier, the scientific genius of Benjamin Franklin, and around-the world travel from the era of Magellan to the space shot. She has worked innovatively in applying insights of climate science historically, in taking food studies across time and space, and in applying questions of scale to history. Strikingly original in framing new topics to investigate, she is equally effective in producing answers to the questions she sets out.
