Studies how connections form in the developing nervous system. Combining morphological, physiological, genetic and molecular approaches, identified mechanisms that regulate this process. Pioneered new genetic methods for visualizing neurons and their connections. AIdentified some of the ways in which synaptic connections fail to form or are not maintained properly in neurological diseases and aging.
