Research centers on the interface of organic, inorganic, physical and theoretical chemistry. He has made major contributions to the understanding of photochemical reactions, to the characterization of reactive intermediates, and to molecular spectroscopy with polarized light. Present interests include the chemistry of silicon, fluorine, boron, and lithium, the photophysics of solar energy conversion, arrays of molecular rotors, and alkylation of gold surfaces.
