Soberón is a theoretical ecologist focusing at the description and understanding of patterns of biodiversity at geographic scales. He has a world reputation in the field of ecological niche modeling, with more than 120 papers and books and chapters published, and more than 7,000 citations to his work (in Web of Science). The publishing house Thompson-Reuters identified him as in the 1% most cited authors in the world, in Ecology in 2015 and 2016. His work as Executive Director of the National Biodiversity Agency of Mexico gave him experience in the field of policy, and area in which he is publishing actively.
