He developed, with Samuel Kortum, the influential Eaton-Kortum model of international trade, extending the Ricardian trade model to many goods and many countries that is amenable to empirical quantification. This model has facilitated literally hundreds of papers on multinational production and trade flows. Also, a leading contributor on the anatomy of international trade, including the participation of individual firms in exporting and the formation of trade networks. Earlier work with Mark Gersovitz involved the development of the Eaton-Gersovitz model of sovereign lending and default, which has served as the basis of much subsequent work.  Eaton has also worked on expropriation of private capital, strategic trade policy, and international economic sanctions.
