Oden served as Associate Vice President for Research, was the Founding Director of the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, and was a Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics as well as a Professor of Mathematics. He was recognized for research contributions and leadership in the development of computational science and engineering, particularly in the enhancement of the mathematical foundations and practical utility of the finite element method.
