Monahan is a psychologist known for his work on how psychological research is used, and should be used, in the courtroom. He is an active member of the National Academy of Medicine and of the National Research Council, and has directed two major Research Networks for the MacArthur Foundation. His research is cited frequently by courts, including the Supreme Court in Barefoot v. Estelle, referring to him as the leading thinker on the issue of violence risk assessment, and most recently in Dukes v. Wal-Mart, on the use of social psychologists as expert witnesses on gender discrimination.
