John D. MacArthur Professor of Sociology and Law. Research spans causes of crime, war crimes, and human rights. Empirical work on violence in Darfur and the Balkans pioneered the application of crime measurement techniques to genocide. Using systematic methods and a survey conducted by the U.S. State Department, he and his colleagues found substantial under-counting. Their advanced demographic methods produced evidence of between 200,000 and 400,000 homicides. The conclusions were widely reported and altered public comprehension and the discussion of the tragedy in Darfur. Books include Darfur and the Crime of Genocide (2009) and Justice in the Balkans: Prosecuting War Crimes in the Hague Tribunal (2003).
