President of the University of Notre Dame since 2005. Maintained the school's distinctive Catholic character while strengthening its role as a national leader in the dialogue between faith and reason. Ordained a priest of the Congregation of the Holy Cross in 1983. A member of Notre Dame philosophy faculty since 1990, and author of Knowledge and Faith in Thomas Aquinas (1997) and numerous scholarly articles. As president, led construction of new campus facilities for engineering and science, as well as for programs in social concerns; development of new university initiatives in nanotechnology, ecology, and research; and creation of new partnerships with South Bend for regional renewal and development. Recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor (2007).
