Elucidated the functioning of ecosystems and the role of climate change. Leader in the British science community. Interests focussed on the population dynamics and biodiversity of birds and insects. Contributed to fundamental understanding of the ecological consequences of climate change. Now retired and no longer active in any of these fields. Currently mostly involved in policies for wildlife conservation at both national (UK) and county (Yorkshire) levels, particularly habitat restoration and re-creation at landscape and catchment scales.
