Developed a widely adopted isotopic technique for the study of microbial metabolism and a frequently used microscope technique for the study of microbial communities.  Recent interests in ectomycorrhizal fungal symbiosis with arctic and temperate trees and shrubs; importance of this symbiosis in the nitrogen cycle.
