Distinguished Scientist and Senior Research Scholar, The Ecosystems Center, Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole. Global leader in Arctic limnology and Arctic ecology for the past four decades. Leader of ecosystems research in the Long-Term Ecological Research program of the National Science Foundation. Developed a widely adopted isotopic technique for the study of microbial metabolism and a frequently used microscope technique for the study of microbial communities.  Recent interests in ectomycorrhizal fungal symbiosis with arctic and temperate trees and shrubs; importance of this symbiosis in the nitrogen cycle.
