Professor of Economics Stanford University Research is on techniques for designing and evaluating monetary policy, fiscal policy, and international financial policy. He developed the model of staggered price setting, formulated the concept of a tradeoff between inflation and output variability, and designed a policy rule to guide central banks in setting interest rates. He developed methods for solving and estimating rational expectation models, and applied these to the U.S. and other countries. Current research is on monetary policy in emerging market economies and on the operation of the federal funds market in the United States.
