Professor J.A. Armstrong was the former Director of the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. Prior to his appointment, he was a researcher and later manager at the Laser Science Group and then an adjunct professor of physics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is a member of both the American Physical Society and the National Academy of Engineering. His research interests include applied physics and engineering, lasers, photons, and physics-industrial applications.
