Johanna Stachel is a professor at University of Heidelberg and a nuclear physicist. She works at CERN and is primarily involved in experiments with the Large Hadron Collider in the context of the ALICE collaboration. Her special interest is in quark-gluon plasma. As director of the ALICE Transition Radiation Detector project, she studies the behavior of the state of matter from free quarks and gluons. Her phenomenological work has made a significant contribution to defining the phase boundary between normal matter and quark-gluon plasma with the aid of experimental data.

Stachel’s prizes include the Cross of Merit (1st Class) of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Lise Meitner Prize of the European Physical Society, the Lautenschläger Research Prize, and the Stern-Gerlach Medal of the German Physical Society, where she also previously served as president. She holds a doctorate from University of Mainz.
