He is the author of books and essays about contemporary poetry and fiction, and the editor of anthologies of American poetry. President for fifteen years of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, he has previously served as executive director of the Modern Language Association and editor of PMLA, and as Dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. An addicted reader, he has served on juries for the Pulitzer Prizes, the national Book Awards, the national Book Critics Circle, the Irish Times International Fiction Prize, the Commonwealth Prize for Literature, the Rea Short Story Award, and others.
