Research and writing have centered on European history in the twentieth century, with a special focus on France. Has written on politics, the labor movement, and socialism in France. Has contributed to and edited studies in the history of social movements in a world setting. The textbook of which he has been co-author with R.R. Palme since 1956, A History of the Modern World, is currently being prepared for a ninth edition.
