Messing is known for conceptualizing and developing whole-genome shotgun DNA sequencing, suitable for contiguous chromosomal sequences, and the M13mp/pUC/JM cloning kits, which are highly cited by other researchers. He made his innovations freely available, contributing to rapid advances throughout the life sciences (e.g. erythropoietin for cancer patients, soybean-tolerant corn, and insect-resistant cotton). He applied these microbial tools to help create the field of plant genomics with a focus on raising the nutritional quality of food. His notable honors include the Wolf Prize in Agriculture (2013) and the Promega Biotechnology Award of the American Society of Microbiology (2014).
