Jessica Stockholder mixes painting, environmental intervention and sculpture in ways that create hybrid forms. Her work can be understood variously as sculpture and multimedia installation. Her work is most often concerned with a range of topics that engage the highly malleable relationship between content and context, and questions of boundary and autonomy both literaly and in relation to metaphor. Seemingly disparate, everyday objects are merged to form unexpected holistic and vibrant Happenings. Her work is distinguished by a precise and nuanced use of color, inventive sense of composition and witty materiality. Site-specific pieces overrun their environments, spilling out of windows, through doors, and into the surrounding landscape as Stockholder orchestrates an experience at the intersection of the pictorial and the physical, probing how meaning derives from physicality. Stockholder has exhibited at the Dia Center for the Arts, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Open Air Museum in Belgium, the Whitney Museum of American Art, P.S. 1, and the Venice Biennale.
